Dr. Firew A Biruu

I am a father, a husband, a son, a brother and an enthusiast Electromechanical Engineer. I was born to a middle class and strong family that believes in education and public service as the means of living by example.

My amazing dad is Abera Biru and my loving mother, Wegene Tsegaye. I have four brothers and I am the eldest.

I and my wife Ayni are proud parents of one smart boy, Yeron, 6, and two amazing girls, Ednah, 4, and Bitya, 2.

      1. Multispectral Imaging System- Electronics for the Farm of the Future

      September 2014 to June 2015
Members: Firew Abera, Khaled Chowdhury, Josh Elijah, Daniel Mroczak, Jawad Chowdhury, David Mecrow, Khairul Nizam Rooslan

The aim of this project was to develop next generation farming technology that can be used to automatically detect the location of weeds within a field of crops. In this way, it could eliminate the need for manual weeding techniques or broad pesticide application, instead leading to automatic targeted pesticide application.

The goal of this project was to develop a prototype scanner that can be mounted on a tractor for automatically detecting weeds.

My role on this project involved:

      • Mechanical design and simulation of all prototypes for the project
      • Researching and implementing LED over-driving principles
      • Designing and implementing LED board powering circuitry and control

      2. Application of Piecewise Cubic Bezier Interpolation for Smooth Trajectory Implementation in Delta Robots

      September 2013 to June 2014
      Members: Firew Abera

This project was carried out as part of a third year independent project. The final paper presented the designand building of a Rostock Delta 3D printer with a relatively newer interpolation application for 3D printing that is the use of Bezier cubic splines in the implementation of curves.

This paper laid out the use of piecewise cubic Bezier splines for trajectory implementation in delta robots.

      The project included:

      • Creating digital sample cubic Bezier splines
      • Comparing velocity and curvature performance of linear and cubic interpolation implementation
      • Devicing a method to implement piecewise cubic Bezier interpolation on the 3D printer arm
      • Intensive use of MATLAB for forward and inverse kinematic analysis
      • Carrying out the complete design and manufacture of the physical delta robot

The project was successfully completed and the delta robot can be found at the School of EEE, University of Manchester, UK

      3. Autonomous Line Following Robotic Buggy

      September 2012 to June 2013
Members: Firew Abera, Boris Tang, Rentao Wu, Liam Baker, Abhishek Raj

A second year Mechatronics Embedded Systems Project

      • Led the mechanical design and integration part of the project.
      • Carried out the required mechatronic engineering design of the robot buggy.
      • Produced a professional 3D CAD design of the complete buggy in SolidWorks and produced the buggy asper the design.
      • Manufactured all mechanical components.
      • Programmed and implemented optional PID line-following algorithm for the Microchip PIC18F8722 platform.
      • Achieved a 1st Class grade in the module.
